I would love to make some bread from scratch but I really lack the know-how, I have yeast and flour. I want to make some without messing it up and wasting the yeast. whats the best way to make bread from scratch?

The best way is sticking to a simply recipe, here is one:

Quote:
4 cup all-purpose flour
1 package yeast
1 cup hot milk
1/4 cup warm water
1/4 cup sugar
4 tablespoon margarine
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg

- Preheat you oven for 20 minutes at 350º
- Add margarine, sugar and salt to milk. Let cool
- Mix water and yeast in a small bowl and set aside for about 5 minutes
- Apart, make a mixture milk and one cup of flour. Mix well.
- Add a slightly beaten egg and the yeast mistrue using a wire whisk.
- Continue adding enough flour to handle easily using a wooden spoon.
- Work the dough with your hands and place it in a greased bowl for rise 15-30 minutes.
- Punch it down and place it in two greased bread pans covered with a damp cloth for a second rise
Bake the dough at 350º for about 15 minutes

I have always done a poor job when it comes to making bread, with the exception of biscuits and cornbread. Thanks for the recipe, Mastermind, I may get up the nerve to give it another shot.

Wow, thank you for this basic recipe! I have always used our breadmaker whenever we wanted fresh bread. But, this recipe isn't *too* scary. I'll have to get up the courage to give it a try!!

Sure this is very easy and if you leave the yeast rise you will be enjoying your own home-baked bread.

Good luck all and please share your experiences after trying this recipe

Here is an easy recipe for dinner rolls and there is no kneading involved. It's my default recipe.

Icebox Butterhorns

Recipe By :
Serving Size : 0 Preparation Time :0:00
Categories : Breads

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
1 (1/4-ounce) package active dry yeast
2 tablespoons warm water -- (110'-115')
2 cups warm milk -- (110'-115')
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg -- beaten
1 teaspoon salt
6 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup butter or margarine -- melted
Additional melted butter

In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in water. Add milk, sugar, egg,
salt and 3 cups flour; beat until smooth. Beat in butter and remaining
flour (dough will be slightly sticky). Do not knead. Place in a greased
bowl. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Punch dough down and divide in
half. On a floured surface, roll each half into a 12-in. circle. Cut each
circle into 12 pie-shaped wedges. Beginning at the wide end, roll up each
wedge. Place rolls, point side down, 2 in. apart on greased baking sheets.
Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Bake at
350' for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Immediately brush tops with
melted butter.
