I've always wondered - does putting produce in the crisper drawer in the fridge actually make a difference? If so, how much difference?

I have no clue, but I have often wondered just what exactly a "crisper" drawer is supposed to do?

Heh, I hate how it's all printed in big letters on the drawer in my fridge, like the fridge is saying, "well, duh, a crisper drawer, of course, you should know what that is!" I think it's... supposed to keep vegetables fresher? Or maybe I'm imagining that, and it's for something else altogether...

Our crisper drawer works pretty well, but then again our refrigerator is new so those setting had *better* work! Our crisper drawer has adjustable settings.

How do you know if it's working well? Unless you know what it does. And if so, tell us!

I don't know what the theory behind the crisper drawer is, but I wrap romaine lettuce in paper towel to reduce the moisture which helps keep it crisper.

Also I store broccoli in water if it's starting to get soft. The water makes if firm again.

Kind of like it rehydrates the broccoli? Is that the theory?

Yes, I suppose that would be the theory. In practice I notice it works with carrots, too. I'm not sure what effect it would have on the nutritional value.

I assume as the vegetables are stored without being canned or frozen that they loose nutrients?
