Has anyone else here ever done the Atkins diet? What are your thoughts on this diet?

I was on the plan for a while and loved it. I didn't need to lose any weight but it actually made me feel better healthwise.

I'm not a huge fan of the Atkins Diet, mainly, because I think carbohydrates give you the energy needed to sustain your vigor and excitement. A website about the negatives of Atkins Diet quotes many professionals as saying things to the extent of, "The Atkins Diet and its ilk--any eating regimen that encourages gorging on bacon, cream and butter while shunning apples, all in the name of weight loss--are a dietitian's nightmare."

Well, perhaps not a total nightmare. I guess what I really think is that different diets are good for different people. You have to try different things and see what works for you. If it's about weight loss, many people change their eating habits without changing their excercising habits which is really important.

You've just got to do your research and find out what works for you. To be corny, I'm on a seafood diet... when I see food I eat it!

I tried the Atkins diet but did not like it. I love pasta and bread way too much I suppose! Now I am doing the Weight Watchers diet and have been following it for a couple months with some slight variations. I don't follow it to a T but use it as a guideline. I think that works best, otherwise you start obsessing about what you're eating without the ability to enjoy it.

And, since we're all here, I'm sure we like to enjoy what we eat!

Like someone said here already, I am in a seafood diet, what I see I eat! LOL! But since I love meat I think the Atkins diet would be great... only right now I can't really afford it! So I am eating cheap stuff and most of it is carbs, pasta and bread, which of course I totally love! The good thing is that I have a bike to go around so I do exercise regularly, most of the time, and even more in the summer.

I really don't feel the Atkins diet is very healthy due to the concentration on red meats and such. I agree with eating low on the glycemic index, but where is the focus on fruits and whole grains? I just think it is too extreme. It seems that Atkins is also going out of style a bit.
Plus, every person I know who lost weight on Atkins gained it back *double* once they started eating regular again.

I tried the atkins diet and it is very unbalanced. I do depression awareness and people who suffer from depression should not have an unbalanced diet.

I thought about doing it but I agree with the above posters I love my carbs way to much. There is no way I could go without my pasta. I have heard good and bad about the diet. It doesn't seem to be as big as it was though a year ago.

I have tried the Atkins diet but it did not work out for me. I really missed my pasta. I guess maybe I wasn't really ready to devote myself to it.

My wife tried it for a while. We don't follow it by the book, but we do try to limit the carbs.

I notice that lately the Canada Food Guide suggested more fruits and vegetables, so that fits into our plan to have less carbs, too.

Personally, I do not have the discipline to follow something like the Atkins diet, although there are some general principles there that I think are sound. Consulting a doctor for suggestions on how to eat would strike me as being more balanced.
