i was reading a newspaper yesterday and it had an article saying that atkins diet can really help you get in shape. so i guess i should go for it. though never tried it earlier.
I've had two friends who did Atkins and were told emphatically by their doctors to STOP, because it was causing them serious health problems. It *is* unbalanced. Also, if you look at photos of Atkins, he was NOT a thin, healthy-looking man, at all.
If it is not followed correctly, there can be some disastrous consequences. I have a dear friend who was on it for a while, and he lost a good amount of weight. However, he eventually got to the point where his muscles deteriorated and he was hospitalized. He had to slowly work his way back to carbohydrates, but he is still not in the shape he once was. It has been about 2 years since.
Not sure why everyone is having problems with Atkins. The diet only says to reduce carbs not get rid of them completely. The reason why the population is the way it is today is because we eat more carbs than anything else.
There is a balance with everything and even the Atkins diet says that you only reduce the carbs considerably in the first couple of weeks, then you increase it as you go.
i guess in that case its better to have home cooked food rather than Atkins diet which is doing no good to anyone. thats what i figured out from all the above posts.
A few things turn me off about the Atkins diet. First, I enjoy pasta and bread a lot. A sandwich just isn't the same without the bread. Next, the initial transition is really tough on your body from what I hear. You burn up all the carbs in your body and then because the body is used to that, it gets all screwy. Oh yeah, also because Dr. Atkins died because of it. That's kind of a turn off.
