There are so many kinds of vegetarians! Personally, I'm a very "liberal" vegetarian, and I eat chicken, fish, eggs, dairy, pretty much anything but red meat. This puts me in a sort of "on the fence" position - the vegans poke fun at me for being a meat-eater, and the meat-eaters poke fun at me for being a vegetarian. What sort of vegetarianism works for you? How did you decide?

hmmmmm, till now i have come across vegetarians who do not even touch meat . you seem to be some kind of an exception in the vegetarian world . though its tough for pure vegetarians to survive in some countries, so i think it mostly depends where you are living. if you are in middle east, you cannot be a vegetarian as you wont find anything which doesnt have meat. in european countries, a pure veg can survive

Actually, there are different terms for the situations you are describing. Most vegans won't touch any product that has come from an animal in some way...like milk, cheese, mayo, and eggs. Lacto-ovo vegetarians eat milk and egg products, but no meat, while lacto vegetarians include only milk products in their diet and ovo vegetarians include only eggs. It gets a little confusing!

Oh, I had it the other way around - I thought ovo vegetarians didn't eat eggs, and lactos didn't eat dairy. I get confused with all the labels, so when I'm cooking for other vegetarians I just ask them what they don't eat.

I think it's always better to ask, hehe. A friend came up to visit this weekend, and she said she was vegan but would eat some milk and eggs when it came down to it, hehe.

Personally, I am not much on a totally vegetarian diet. At the same time, I do not think I have to have a meat with every meal either. One of my favorite comfort food meals is simply pinto beans flavored with garlic, cornbread muffins, and cole slaw with an oil/vinegar dressing. When paired with a glass of freshly brewed tea, this meal almost always lifts my spirits.

I like the idea of vegetarian, but I *do* enjoy a bit of meat, so I'm not one. I did follow McDougall's plan for a while (it's vegan) but I modified it a little and included cheese, milk, and eggs. We had meat maybe twice a week, during that time. We did have plenty of variety and delicious meals, so we didn't feel deprived.

This is interesting. I thought that a "vegetarian" wouldn't eat fish or any kind of meat, by definition.

I'm not a vegetarian, although I do have some vegetarian meals from time to time. I don't crave meat the way that some people do.

I am not a vegetarian, but have thought it would be good to do at least 3 dinner meals a week. I just like my steak, sorry.
