My oldest grandson decided to become a vegetarian. He is 16 years old and I am a little concerned if it would be healthy for him to do this? I know people who are and they seem ok. But because of him being so young it concerned me.

I think it would be interesting to take a look at WHY people are vegetarians. This plays, I would assume, the biggest role in determining WHAT type of vegetarian they are. Am I right?

Maybe it's for nutrition/weight/health
Maybe you love animals
Maybe you disagree with the way animals are slaughtered
Maybe you just don't LIKE meat
Maybe you were brought up as a vegetarian and it just stuck
Maybe you are allergic to, or your body doesn't agree with, meat products

I'd be interested to hear from the vegetarians, and those who are close with vegetarians/vegans, why did they choose the lifestyle? (maybe this should be a poll!)

riskey58: i would try to be as encouraging as you can. maybe do some research on what foods can replace the vitamins you would normally get in meats and make sure he's getting enough of those.

I like meat too much to become a total vegetarian. We do have some meals that are vegetarian, but I don't think my family would ever become completely vegetarian.

I think you would be termed a 'semi-vegatarian' according to health.gov:

Quote:
Vegetarian—There are several categories of vegetarians, all of whom avoid meat and/or animal products. The vegan or total vegetarian diet includes only foods from plants: fruits, vegetables, legumes (dried beans and peas), grains, seeds, and nuts. The lactovegetarian diet includes plant foods plus cheese and other dairy products. The ovo-lactovegetarian (or lacto-ovovege-tarian) diet also includes eggs. Semi-vegetarians do not eat red meat but include chicken and fish with plant foods, dairy products, and eggs.

Why don't you take the step? Walk into a restaurant... see a big juicy burger on the menu... and it's love all over again? Hehe
