So what is the one thing that has been passed through the family that you always cook on the holiday. Ours would have to be the famous green bean cassorole and the everfamous sweetpotatos with marshmallows on top.

Oh, the sweet potatoes with marshmallows are a classic at our house, too! They're definitely a Christmas-only dish, though. It just seems wrong to have them any other time.

I've never heard of that dish. Could you tell me how it's made?

My mother makes a jelly salad with a whipped cream product mixed in that she likes to serve with fowl. Other than that, I don't think I've heard of a sweet dish similar to that combination.

One enduring Christmas tradition that I still do is preparing sausage balls. these little goodies are ideal to keep folks from trying to sample the dishes before you sit down and also make great hostess gifts when you are invited to a party.

Would it be asking too much to ask for the recipe for these? I really like things like this. There's also an appetizer meatball recipe where the sauce uses... oh dear, I think it's (gross as it sounds) grape jelly and chili sauce? Anyone hear of that or have the recipe?

Sure, here you go:

SAUSAGE BALLS

3 Cups Bisquick
2 Cups Cheddar Cheese, grated but not too finely I prefer sharp cheddar, but you can use mild cheddar)
1 pound sausage, hot or mild ( I like the mild with the sharp cheddar)

Preheat the oven to 350 degree; mix all ingredients together, making a thick dough. Note - this is a great way to work off some frustration if you spend the day fighting at pre Christmas sales.

Form into 1" balls and arrange on a baking or cookie sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes; remove and place on paper towels to drain.

Sausage balls are great hot, but they also are nice to have around at room temperature also. On the off chance you have any left over, they will freeze well.

By thy way, I have a friend who used to mix a small jar of grape jelly in woith a jar of barbeque sauce in a slow cooker as a sauce for cocktail weiners. It was pretty good.

Seriously?? I have to say, that is an idea that would NEVER have occurred to me! What does the end product taste like?

Katharina - this is similar to the recipe for meatballs prepared with grape jelly. I prefer this one, though. HOpe you like it!

Saucy Cocktail Meatballs
2 lbs ground beef
1 cup cornflake crumbs
1/3 c dried parsley flakes
2 eggs
2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/3 c catsup
3 Tbsp minced onion
Combine all of above ingredients & mix well. Form into small, bite-size meatballs. Arrange on 9x13 baking pan

In a small saucepan, combine the following:
1 14-16 oz can whole berry cranberry sauce
1 (12 oz) bottle chili sauce
2 Tbsp brown sugar
1 Tbsp lemon juice
Cook this over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until mixture is smooth and cranberry sauce has melted Pour over meatballs. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes at 340 degrees OR

After mixing and shaping meatballs, put them in your CROCK POT!! Pour cranberry mixture over top and cook on medium setting for about 4-6 hours

Excellent! Thank you for sharing this... it sounds very good for an
appetizer! I assume the low-fat Bisquick would work just as well.
I only ever buy it when I'm doing a recipe with it, but that's the
kind I've been picking up.

I don't THINK so! I mostly shop online.

Thank you, I'm sure I will! I think things like this would be great to serve
for (albeit not Spanish food) a tapas meal or party. I'll bet they smell great
after being in the crockpot for a few hours, too.
