Thanks for putting that address on here! I was just about to do it myself...

What this proposed FDA law would do is make it so that up to 100% of the cocoa butter in chocolate could be replaced by vegetable fats and they could still call it Chocolate! So when you buy a bar of "fine chocolate" there would be a possibility that there is vegetable fats in it and not cocoa butter.

Cocoa butter is important because of the way it melts. If this change occurs the companies that use vegetable fats will have chocolate that will have a horrible melting property and ruin the taste and feel of the chocolate.

This law will confuse people on what real chocolate is in a time when people WANT REAL CHOCOLATE!

So write in to the FDA! All the instructions are on the link below and it only takes a minute. Go tell them that you don't want to allow vegetable oils in Chocolate!

I hadn't heard about that. Hopefully if that is passed, there will be clear labeling so there's minimal confusion.

I haven't heard about a similar move here in Canada.

I'm all for labeling things correctly, but at what point does the labeling get too difficult to understand? I sometimes don't know what I'm reading.

There are so many rules, regulations and loopholes that the average consumer can't distinguish one thing from the next. But, this DOES sound like one more little loophole that companies can use to make a LESS quality product that decieves customers into thinking it's just as good as the rest. Good luck with preventing the standards change.

Willy Wonka would be so utterly dissappointed!

I really hope they don't allow vegetable oils in chocolate. It would screw up many recipes that require the smooth melting of chocolate. I can't imagine that all companies would be "clear" that they swapped the cocoa butter for veggie oils.

Changing the components in chocolate would definitely be a bad thing, as far as I'm concerned, you just don't mess with chocolate!
