Melizzy - this is a really cute and easy way to decorate your holiday table. Purchase wheat berries in the health/organic section of your market or go to a health food store for these.
Soak the wheat berries overnight -
Drain them & then plant them in some potting soil. For Easter, you can either plant them in one large container (which you can put into a basket later) & then use it as a table centerpiece OR you can purchase inexpensive small clay pots (paint them in pastel Easter colors if you're feeling overly ambitious)
After you've planted the wheat berries, you can expect to see sprouts in about 2-3 days. Water sparingly - but don't let the soil completely dry out. For grass that will grow 3-6 inches by Easter, I'd plant the wheat berries about 10 days before your celebration.
You can put your dyed eggs or even plastic ones in the grass. Add a big, beautiful bow on the basket handle. This will definately WOW all of your guests.
I usually make one large basket of wheat berry grass for my center piece and then carry through with the same theme and make a bunch of the small ones. I write the name of each guest on an egg (hard boiled & dyed, of course), put the egg in the small pot and use it as a place card for dinner and as a favor for guests to bring home. You can also sprinke a few jelly beans or chocolate eggs in the individual pots.
A few tea lights or votives on the table completes the tablescape!!
This is always an unexpected surprise & the kids just love it.
